The Georgia State Patrol will hopefully make Atlanta area roads a safer place this holiday season by ramping up its efforts to detect impaired drivers and prevent drunk driving accidents, Atlanta personal injury lawyer Bruce Millar says.
"At this time of year, you have icy roads and people driving after they've consumed alcohol at holiday parties, and that is a dangerous combination," says Millar, whose Atlanta personal injury law firm, Millar & Mixon, LLC, Injury Attorneys, represents drunk driving accident victims throughout the Atlanta metropolitan area and the state of Georgia.
"My hope is that our Georgia state troopers can arrest more drunk drivers this holiday season and prevent innocent motorists and their families from experiencing the tragic consequences of being involved in a drunk driving accident," Millar says.
As part of National Drunk Driving and Drugged Driving Prevention Month in December, the Georgia State Patrol will increase high-visibility patrols and impaired driving road checks over the coming weeks.
So far this year, the state police have arrested nearly 13,600 people for impaired driving. A year ago, during the period between Thanksgiving and New Year's, state troopers made 1,841 DUI/DWI arrests, according to a Department of Public Safety news release.
The goal of this year's campaign will be to intercept impaired drivers before they cause a traffic crash during a month that tends to be one of the deadliest on our nation's roadways, DPS said. Last December, across the country, 873 people died in DUI/DWI-related auto accidents and motorcycle accidents.
Millar says it is important to remind people that in addition to facing criminal charges for drunk driving, they could also face steep financial consequences in a personal injury or wrongful death lawsuit if they injure or kill another person on the road, including paying compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering and, potentially, punitive damages.
"As a personal injury lawyer who has represented drunk driving accident victims and their families, I know these accidents can have an immense physical, emotional and financial impact," Millar says. "I think if more people knew of these consequences, they would never get behind the wheel if intoxicated."
Instead of driving after consuming alcohol at a holiday party, Miller suggests using a sober designated driver, calling for a taxi, using public transportation or asking a friend or family member to help with finding a safe way home.
